Car Insurance Coverage
There are two types of auto insurance you can purchase.
Liability Coverage – This is the bare minimum coverage. It covers the other persons vehicle if you are in an accident. Most states require you to carry at least liability limits to protect the other driver.
Full Coverage – What is full coverage? It can pay for damage to your car and the other parties car. If you have a Lien holder (a car payment) you are generally required to carry this type of coverage.
Liability Insurance on your car is broken down in to several areas.
Bodily Injury – This area determines how much the insurance company will pay for injuries to a person. Different states vary as to the required minimum. In North Carolina the minimum is 30/60 and the maximum is 300/300. What does it mean? If you are in an accident and you carry Bodily Injury of 30/60 the insurance company will pay out $30,000 per person and up to $60,000 per accident. Physical Damage – This covers the actual damage done to the property (car). The North Carolina state minimum is $25000. However you can carry up to $300,000. What you purchase is how much the insurance company pays out. For more information check out the Consumer Guide to Auto Insurance.
